Why Volvo Replacement Key Fob Is Harder Than You Imagine

Volvo drivers love the remote control features of their key fob. Using a smartphone app, they can lock and unlock the vehicle or start the engine and even locate the vehicle.

First, place the fob onto a clean surface with the logo side facing upward. Find the button that will let it go. Place a coin in between the fob cover and the fob, then gently pull it up.

Unlocking the Door

Volvo's remote keyfobs let you unlock your car's doors, tailgate and fuel filler flap with the press of one button. They can also switch on the ignition, turn off the alarm, and even operate your sunroof if equipped. It's no longer necessary to look for your keys, or lose access to your vehicle.

You may not be aware of some key fob functions that are hidden. One of these is an unlocked and lock button that you can press in the event the battery in your key fob dies.

Place your key fob on the table with the Volvo logo facing upwards, and press the manual lock/unlock. Find the black button close to the edge of your key fob, and gently press it. This will open the cover that hides the manual key blade. You will require a flathead screwdriver or coin to flip the cover counterclockwise, so the arrow is aligned with "open."

Beginning the Engine

Modern Volvo key fobs offer a level convenience and functionality that is unrivalled by manual keys. However, like any battery-operated electronic device key fobs can lose its charge or stop working over time. If you've noticed that your key fob is less responsive to pressing the lock or unlock buttons, it's an indication that it's time to replace the battery.

If your car is equipped with a dealer-installed Engine Remote Start accessory, you can also use the key fob to activate this feature. The car will be heated or cooled to the same temperature it was set to when it was parked, and run for up 15 minutes.



Remove the cover that covers the back of the key fob with your fingernail. The button should be underneath the cover on a diagonal, near the edge of the body. Remove it by sliding it downwards, then to the right. The cover will fall open and slide off to reveal the manual key blade within! If you still can't locate the button, search the newly exposed manual key access area to see whether there is a hidden slot or lever.

Close the Windows

One of the features that is hidden that is not visible on Volvo key fobs is that you are able to close all windows in a matter of seconds by using them. This is great when you're trying to squeeze into a cramped parking spot, or even just when you're in need of fresh air in your cabin while driving.

To unlock the windows simply press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote for four seconds. This will lower all the windows, and also the sunroof if your vehicle comes with one. When you're done with the car, you can close everything by pressing the lock button for four seconds.

You can also set off the panic alarm inside your car with the key fob. It will emit an intense, attention-grabbing roar that could frighten away thieves and allow you to return home in peace after a night out. This feature is great when you live in a dangerous area or wish to ensure the safety of your family when you are away from home.

Opening the Tailgate

Volvo has loaded its key fobs with a number of useful features. They are great when you're working on shopping or helping your kids pack their sports gear after practice.

If you have the Hands Free Liftgate with Logo Projection and Programmable Height (if equipped) You can open it by using the key fob. Press the button to open it, and then press the same button to close it once you're done.

Use the key fob to ensure you are ready to start the vehicle. (Don't be concerned if your battery fails or your vehicle isn't starting because it also has a mechanical key slot). This is just one of the many tricks you can use for your brand new Volvo.

Turning off the Alarm

Modern key fobs are more efficient than a traditional car key. They're not always perfect, and the batteries can be dead. If you're running out of time or don't want to visit an establishment to get your key fob programmed, you can try to get it to work at home.

Choose a clean, flat surface and lay out your key fob, battery and any other keys. Set the key fob with the Volvo logo facing upwards and then locate a tiny black button to the left side of the fob and slide it downwards and to the right. The cover should come loose and fall off and reveal the mechanical key blade beneath it.

You can open all the doors and the reargate by pressing the unlock button on the fob's key twice. By pressing the lock button for 2 minutes, you are able to close the windows and shut the sunroof when they're fitted. Reconnect  volvo key programming , and the alarm will stop. If it doesn't, the owner's manual should include a method to reset the alarm.
